What Do you prefer?
#2
Personally, I’m all about grounded, lifelike characters and a solid backstory!

For me, a character's backstory is what gives their actions and motivations real weight. When a character feels human, imperfect, believable, and driven by where they’ve been, it makes playing or reading them so much more rewarding.

For instance, one of my favorite characters is a quiet, weary blacksmith named Elden. On the surface, he's just a craftsman living on the outskirts of a border town, trying to keep his head down. But his backstory is where the real depth lies: years ago, he was a high-ranking battle engineer who built war machines for a tyrannical regime. Realizing the horror of what he helped create, he fled during a siege, changed his name, and took up blacksmithing to use his hands for creation rather than destruction.

Because of that past, every choice he makes in-game has context, he’s deeply reluctant to forge weapons, fiercely protective of refugees, and haunted by his old reputation catching up to him. Having that history transforms him from just "a guy with a hammer" into a character with genuine stakes and internal conflict.
